50 Things to do before I’m 50!

50! The big five-oh, the dreaded age milestone nobody likes to think about. For me that number is always there in the back of my mind. My father didn’t get to celebrate his 51st birthday. My mother did not make it to 57. When you lose someone young, it automatically makes you reflect on your own life, especially when it’s your own parents. You don’t take your birthdays for granted, let alone complain about growing older. In fact, I make it a point to celebrate each passing year as if there’s no tomorrow. The grey hair that seems to be increasing, I can do without though πŸ˜‰ as well as with the rapidity the years seem to fly by.

I am nowhere near my fifties, I am not even 40 yet πŸ™‚ but, unlike most people, I am already reflecting on the life I have lead so far and the things I still want to do. In my life, the traditional bucket list that gained popularity after the so called movie that first introduced it, has been renamed ’50 things to do before I’m 50′.

This is not because I assume my life will be over after that, but because in my opinion, every day I get to live after I turn 50 is a gift. In fact, every day we get now is already a gift and we should make the most of it. Do the things you want sooner rather than later. I want to be able to say I lived each day of my life for however long or short it may be. When the time is there, I want people to remember me as someone who has lived her life to its full potential just like BeyoncΓ© sings in her beautiful song.

Genesis of the list

The idea for the list came last year after I moved to my awesome new apartment in the center of Rotterdam. I had made my dream of living in the city reality and it was time to start living the life I wanted. This is when I started working on my list and I am still doing so to this day.

So far I have accumulated 40 things on the list of 50. Some things I have already crossed off, some things have just recently been added. I still have room for 10 more things, so if you have any great ideas I would love to hear them πŸ˜‰ . And yes, I know that I’ve scribbled down things that will probably never be scratched off. But hey, a girl can dream can’t she?! πŸ˜‰ That is after all part of the fun. Besides, I love a good challenge from time to time. As the saying goes: ‘Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all’.
